Music Majors are encouraged to enroll in the suggested general studies courses to successfully transfer to most Mississippi Universities and Colleges. To graduate from JC, however, the student must only complete the following general studies requirements, PSY 2553 , ENG 1113 , MAT 1313 , as well as 8 hours of Lab Sciences, 6 hours of Humanities, 3 hours of Fine Arts, 6 hours of Social Science, and 28 hours or more of electives. The general studies curriculum is in addition to the required music education/ performance core.

Music Education/Performance

(Transfer Pathway)

The music department offers university-parallel courses leading to the Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Music Education degrees with the following pathways: music education or music industry. Students must select an emphasis of guitar, piano, vocal music or instrumental music. Music courses are designed to parallel courses in the music areas of the freshman and sophomore years of any senior college or university and fully prepare students to enter their junior year of study.

Music students are required to enroll in MUS 1911MUS 1921MUS 2911, and MUS 2921, participate in a performance ensemble, study piano (class or applied) and take lessons in their major applied area every semester in attendance at JC. Instrumental and Vocal Education pathway students must take piano as their minor applied music. Piano students may take either voice or an instrument as the minor applied, but voice is recommended. Non-music students are provided the opportunity to pursue an interest in music through individual and group performances, music courses, and private instruction (see laboratory fees); however, students seeking admission to performing groups (Band, Choir, JC Voices, Jones on Stage, Musical Theater, etc) must audition for membership. Performing groups are open to non-music students as well as to music pathway students; service scholarships are available for qualified participants in all performing ensembles. Auditions are held throughout the year. Practice room facilities are provided for those enrolled in applied music courses. All students enrolled in applied lessons are required to maintain daily practice periods.

Students in a music pathway enrolled in applied lessons must perform a jury for all applied faculty. Students who do not perform a jury will receive the grade of “I” or “F.” The student may perform a sophomore recital in lieu of the jury requirement for one semester.

Pathway Requirements:

The following advisement plan is a recommended course of study. Academic pathways offered at Jones College are designed to meet the educational needs and advancement of students who plan to transfer course credit to a university and complete a bachelor’s degree. As part of each academic pathway, students will take courses to meet Jones College’s general education core requirements and electives as determined by the student and his/her faculty advisor. All academic pathways are designed to lead to an Associate of Arts degree.

To streamline the transfer of credit from Jones College to any university in the State of Mississippi, Jones College participates in the articulation agreement between the Mississippi Community College Board and the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning. For the purpose of ensuring transfer-ability within Mississippi, the Mississippi Articulation Transfer Tool (MATT) shall be used to advise and guide students in choosing the best courses to take as part of the requirements to graduate from Jones College with an Associate of Arts degree.

If there are questions, current students should contact their faculty advisor and potential students should contact Enrollment Services  .
